The Buddha’s Wife | summary | first Semester | B.ed |

The Buddha’s Wife

In the given poem, the poet has tried to describe how women have been maltreated by the male figure in the society. Though they are lord’s saint or great politicians/philosophers, their wives are suffering and under their shadow.

Buddha had left his wife and went to the forest for meditation or searching enlightenment. Similarly, wise and great Indian politician had Gandhi involved in protest against British Empire but did nothing to his wife. The poet has taken another example form the Christian tradition; they go to the church by wearing hats for the sake of husbands, when they become worried by their husband's lurch. Although these all the things like time is very painful to them.

Likewise, the poet has taken another example from Hindu mythology. Lord Krishna had also involved dominating the women in it. The poet has expressed that the milkmaids used to cry and dance to call Krishna in emerald lawn. Krishna used to play with milkmaids only when he wanted. He was not serious in their relationship.

In this way the poet has presented the satire very humorously against the patriarchal system and male ideology which is existing in the society since a long history.
