Don’t Say
Summary:
The poem ‘Do Not Say’
is written by Malaysian poet Mohammad Bin Hajji. It has shown the
feeling and the respect of the people to their country. And the speaker is
against to the so- called rich people because they have given their criticism
through surface study. The people, who have been passing kampong in a car,
pretend to know the simple, poor people and their culture so the speaker gives
his views critically.
The speaker feels anger in that they say his people are lazy because
so called rich people are giving their criticism only by generalization. They
cannot give their judgment only passing through the kampong. Although, kampong
people do not have skyscrapers, they are very gentle, civilized and socially
advanced. His people’s life is the life of culture and full of humanity.
The
speaker also gives the answer to the so-called educated people who think his
people do not have their literatures and culture. The speaker says that they
are enjoying by Sajak and pantum. Similarly, they are enjoying by bangswan. He
also says that they have different epic and theological books. So, they are not
weak and they don’t have literature and culture is wrong.
Kampong
people are also rich in social customs because they have songs like ket and
keris. Therefore, he questions to the critics “have you lived in a kampong?” The speaker also says not to tell
kampong people are poor because they don’t have many banks to deal with the
money but they have natural gifted humanity. He
also claims that they are out from material world but they have learnt
how to organize the social organization. Although they are ignorant from the
political philosophy, they have managed very well than them. In this way, the
poem attacks to the snobbish or so-called educated people or the rich people
who pretend knowing better to kampong people.
